Accessibility Statement

Last updated: 2026-06-28

EdUnion is committed to making our products usable by everyone, however they navigate their device. This page describes the accessibility features the Union app supports today, how to turn them on, and the areas we are actively improving. If you hit a barrier, email support@asku.app — accessibility reports go to the top of our queue.

Conformance status

We are actively working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. This is ongoing work: many areas already meet the standard, and a few are still being completed (listed below). A Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) / Accessibility Conformance Report is being prepared and is available to institutional partners on request.

Features available today

  • Themes, including true-black: Union ships a full light and dark color scheme across every screen, menu, and control. Let Union follow your device's system appearance, or pick a theme directly under Profile → Settings → Appearance — including standard Dark and a true-black OLED theme for reduced eye strain.
  • Larger Text (Dynamic Type): Text is built on iOS Dynamic Type and scales with your system text-size setting, including the larger accessibility sizes. Set it under Settings → Display & Brightness → Text Size or Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text.
  • Reduce Motion: Union respects the system Reduce Motion setting. When it's on, animated loaders, transitions, and continuous animations are simplified or held still throughout the app.
  • Differentiate Without Color Alone: Status information never relies on color by itself. Indicators pair color with text or a distinct shape — dining venues show an “Open” / “Closed” label beside the status dot, live media shows a “LIVE” label, event categories use distinct icons, and saved or upvoted items change shape (filled vs. outline).
  • VoiceOver: Primary screens — home, dining, events, live media, the profile area, and the theme picker — ship descriptive VoiceOver labels, hints, and selection states. We're still completing coverage on a few secondary screens (see below).
  • Respects your system accessibility settings: Union automatically adapts to Bold Text, Increase Contrast, and Reduce Transparency — for example, translucent “glass” surfaces switch to solid backgrounds when Reduce Transparency is on.
  • Large touch targets: Interactive controls meet or exceed the 44×44 pt minimum recommended by Apple's Human Interface Guidelines.
  • Color contrast: Secondary and supporting text is tuned to meet WCAG AA contrast (≥4.5:1 for normal text) in both light and dark appearance.
  • Haptic feedback: Key actions — saving, upvoting, navigating — provide haptic feedback as a non-visual confirmation.

In-app and system settings

Union has a dedicated accessibility area at Profile → Settings → Accessibility that shows the live status of your relevant iOS settings — VoiceOver, Bold Text, Reduce Motion, Increase Contrast, and Reduce Transparency — with a one-tap shortcut to the iOS Settings app to change them. Appearance and themes live under Profile → Settings → Appearance. Union also respects these system settings automatically when you have them turned on:

  • Dark Mode (Settings → Display & Brightness)
  • Larger Text / Dynamic Type (Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Larger Text)
  • Reduce Motion (Settings → Accessibility → Motion) — animated loaders and continuous animations hold still when this is on.
  • Bold Text, Increase Contrast, and Reduce Transparency (Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size)

Areas we are actively improving

Most of the above ships today. We are still working on:

  • VoiceOver coverage: completing labels and reading order on a few remaining secondary screens, such as calendar settings and event filters.
  • Largest Dynamic Type sizes: continued testing at the biggest accessibility text sizes so dense layouts never clip or truncate.
  • Reduce Motion: gating the last few decorative animations behind the system setting.
  • Contrast: ongoing verification of accent-color-on-background combinations across every theme.

Third-party media

Live media — campus radio and athletics broadcasts — is provided by third parties. Captions and audio descriptions depend on what those providers supply.
